Two men arrested for selling grilled dog meat

Police in Area 25 Lilongwe have arrested two men who have been accused of selling grilled dog meat while passing it off as goat meat to unsuspecting customers in the capital city.

Currently, the men are awaiting to be taken to court to answer charges bordering on operating a food business without a licence, fraud and for endangering the lives of their customers.

While it is only these two men that have been arrested, many similar rumors circulate regarding the use of dead dog carcasses for meat by many unscrupulous “Chiwaya” traders in the country.

Due to the lack of proper certification and their popularity, it is very hard to police this behaviour in the country.

Historically, human consumption of dog meat has been recorded in many parts of the world. In the 21st century, most dog meat is consumed in China, South Korea, and Vietnam, and it is still eaten or is legal to be eaten in other countries throughout the world.

It was estimated in 2014 that worldwide, 25 million dogs are eaten each year by humans.
