Karonga First Grade Magistrate Court has sentenced 19 year old Binam Mwafulirwa to nine years imprisonment with hard labour for engaging in a sexual act with a 13 year old minor. The court heard that Mwafulirwa had unlawful sex with the minor at Baka Research Station on April 5 last year. The state pleaded for a stiffer sentence, saying cases of defilement are on the increase in Karonga.
First Grade Magistrate Tabman Chakaka Nyirenda while acknowledging the seriousness of the sexual offence under the laws of the republic of Malawi, ordered that the sexual offender from Gonthaminga Village in T/A Mwansambo’s area to spend only nine years in jail because he is a first timer.
