It is with great sadness that we report the tragic loss of a young student at Kamuzu Academy in Kasungu. According to police reports, the 16-year-old male student committed suicide in a hostel on January 26th, 2023.
The cause of this tragic event is not fully known at this time, but ithe school authorities reportedly found condoms in the student’s locker, which is in violation of the school’s rules and regulations, and the student was summoned for a disciplinary hearing the following day.
According to Kasungu Police Spokesperson Joseph Kachikho, the student took his own life at around 3pm while his friends were in class. The police, along with medical personnel, arrived on the scene to investigate and postmortem results revealed that the cause of death was suffocation.
The student, who hailed from Subi Village in the area of Traditional Authority Khombedza in Salima District, was a member of the Kamuzu Academy community, and his loss will be deeply felt by his classmates and teachers. The school, as well as the local authorities, are providing support for those affected by this tragic event.
This is a stark reminder of the importance of mental health and the need for a more compassionate and understanding approach to discipline and student’s well being. It’s a tragic event, and it is our hope that it serves as a wake-up call for the community to take a more understanding and compassionate approach to disciplinary actions.
