Mzuzu City Councillors have come under fire for their failure to attend a debate offering Malawians to understand the duties of Mayors and their strategies for developing their areas. On Friday, eight councillors from Mzuzu and Blantyre were conspicuously absent from the event in Lilongwe which was organised by M-hub as part of the citizen engagement platform called Mzinda.
According to M-hub projects officer Blessings Chavula, the event was organised to give citizens a platform to evaluate the plans, strategies and qualifications of the candidates. The debate still went ahead despite the low turnout of the Councillors. Councillors in Mzuzu have re-elected William Mkandawire as Mayor of Mzuzu while their Blantyre counterparts replaced Noel Chalamanda with his deputy Wild Ndipo as the Mayor of Blantyre city.
