Lawyer Wapona Kita has confirmed that he is currently the only lawyer representing Shepherd Bushiri and Mary Bushiri in Malawi after other lawyers left Bushiri’s legal team at the last minute before his appearance in court.
The lawyers are Allan Chinula SC, Lusungu Gondwe, Noel Chalamanda and Khumbo Soko. Bushiri is gearing up to appear in court to hear the charges laid against him after he and his wife Mary handed themselves in to Malawi Police Custody.
South Africa reports that a magistrates court in that country has ordered that property belonging to the Bushiris be seized and forfeited if Bushiri does not present himself at the court in South Africa.
Interpol issued a warrant of arrest for the Bushiri’s after they skipped bail in South Africa and fled to Malawi. South African authorities are looking to extradite Bushiri and his wife and have invoked SADC Protocols for wanted fugitives that Malawi and South Africa are both signatories to.
