ESCOM loses K120m court case

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has been ordered by the High Court in Mzuzu to payout millions after the statutory corporation failed to challenge a court case involving the electrocution of a boy at Mtangatanga in Mzimba. The family of Manase Moyo, 14, is demanding K120 million in compensation for the burns incurred when he stepped on high voltage wires in September 2014.

Family lawyer George Kadzipatike said the High Court in Mzuzu has set March 7 to assess the compensation package. Claims filed in court show the boy was grazing cattle in a bush where an electricity pole had fallen. Kadzipatike said the payout may change depending on the courts evaluation.
