A 23-year-old man in Dedza has committed suicide after his wife turned down his proposal to sell their only pig.
The deceased has been identified as Leonard James of Sumbi Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kasumbu in Dedza District.
According to Dedza Police Deputy Spokesperson , Cassim Manda, the pig was given to the wife, Tisekenawo James, by her uncle.
He said Leonard (now deceased), secretly offered to sale the animal without the knowledge of his wife.
“It is alleged that Leonard sold the pig to a business man who plies his business within their village.
“On Monday, May 24, 2021, a businessman came to Leonard’s house to collect the pig but his wife resisted to give him,” Manda said.
According to Manda, a few days later when his wife was away, Leonard, out of shame, locked himself in the house and consumed an unidentified pesticide.
When his wife came back, she found him battling for life.
Immediately, the wife alerted the neighbours who later found him already dead.
An autopsy report has since revealed that his death was due to acute poisoning.
