Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gotani Hara has evoked standing order 105 on Mulanje South East Member of Parliament Naomi Kilekwa following an altercation between some opposition MPs and individuals in the gallery.
However, the MP has refused to leave the House saying she fears for her life following events that occurred before the Speaker’s order.
Members of the Opposition bench were protesting the presence of Tonse Alliance members and some State House officials, who they claimed were making noise up in the gallery.
This caused a commotion as the Opposition members were seen exchanging words with the individuals in the gallery.
But the Speaker said they are Members of the press therefore should be left to do their job. Following the misunderstanding, the speaker evoked standing order 105 on the Member who, she picked as the one making the most noise at the time.
She has refused to leave the House saying the ‘MCP’ members who are in the gallery would attack her outside and the Speaker has threatened unspecified punishment which she says will be delivered on Monday.
This is the second time the President has been interrupted after Leader of Opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa also interrupted him with a complaint about a lack bottled water, which has since been addressed.
