The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has kept to its word and has paid back K145m to Zameer Karim of Pioneer Investments according to the Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Reyneck Matemba.
Matemba went on to further state that Zameer Karim’s account was frozen as soon as the K145m was deposited with help from the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA).
The money is suspected to be proceeds of crime following the Malawi Police Service Rations scandal where Karim trading as Pioneer Investments colluded with public officials to defraud the Malawian government close to K400m in bogus interest claims and suspected overcharging of goods supplied.
In a press conference a few weeks ago, DPP’s publicity secretary, Nicholas Dausi said the party would in good faith pay back the money it had received as funding from Karim due to what he claimed was a “public misunderstanding”.
