Zimbabwe’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested vice chancellor of University of Zimbabwe, Professor Levi Nyagura, for allegedly abusing his office when he awarded a doctor of philosophy degree (PhD) to former first lady Grace Mugabe.
Local newspaper, The Herald, reports that Nyagura awarded the paper to Robert Mugabe’s wife, the former first lady, without approval of the University council and the senate.
Grace Mugabe was awarded tghe dubious PhD in 2014 within months of enrolling at the University. Mugabe’s thesis, “The Changing Social Structures and Functions of the Family: The Case of Children’s Homes in Zimbabwe”, is also said to only have been published four years after she “graduated”.
Nyagura appeared in court on Monday, and was granted $200 bail by Tilda Mazhande at the Harare Magistrate’s court. He is expected to be back in court on March 5. Nyagura denied the allegations made against him.
