Zambia expels Cuban Envoy

Zambia has reportedly ejected Cuban ambassador to Lusaka for supporting the newly launched opposition Socialist Party during its launch on Saturday.

Amos Chanda, President Edgar Lungu’s spokesperson told Reuters that Ambassador Nelson Pages Vilas was expelled on Sunday “for behavior unbecoming of a diplomat,” adding that diplomatic ties with Cuba would be retained.

“The Cuban ambassador attended a party function and announced that he will support the opposition party and said he wished them well,” said Chanda.

The Socialist party in Zambia is headed by Fred M’membe, a journalist who served as the former editor of the Post Newspaper which was very critical of Edgar Lungu’s Presidency.
