A jealous husband identified as Mark Phiri has been arrested by the Police in Lingadzi, Lilongwe after he shot his wife on suspicion that she was cheating by having extra marital affairs.
The woman, Waheeda Bagus, who was treated at Kamuzu Central Hospital is in a critical condition after being shot in the early hours of Sunday morning by her incensed husband in Area 49 Gulliver.
William Mark Phiri 36 years, hails from Msulilongwe village traditional authority Mankhambira in Nkhatabay district.
According to Police reports, Bagus who is a niece to cabinet minister Salim Bagus, came home late in the wee hours of Sunday morning from a night out before a maid at the house heard her shouting as if her life was in danger. When the maid arrived on the scene to check what was happening, she found Bagus with blood oozing out from her chest.
The husband initially claimed that his wife had shot herself but was later arrested by the police after his story and his actions made them very suspicious when he went to Lingadzi police to get a police report so that Waheeda Bagus could be treated for the gunshot wound.
The police officer asked Phiri if he was involved in an accident since his clothes were stained with blood but the suspect got angry and went back to his car saying he made a mistake reporting to police.
The officer by the reception notified the CID personal who went to where Mark had parked his car and after confrontation, the suspect was found with a pistol. The officer shot in the air to scare the suspect who in return produced his pistol but police managed to grab the pistol from him.
