United Nations says Malawian Women are not adequately rewarded

The United Nations (UN) has said Malawi is not adequately acknowledging the role women play in the country. This is despite women forming the greatest national resource for knowledge, talent and investment. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) country representative Mia Seppo said this on Wednesday at Masangano Primary School grounds in Ntchisi during this year’s International Women’s Day celebrations.

Seppo cited women in national women sports teams, those working relentlessly in the fields and those who entered the workforce and continue to inspire. “The majority of these women are not recognized or financially rewarded for their work,” she said, adding, “they sustain households with free labour, and miss opportunities for education, growth and civic engagement. We must break this cycle, and ensure that girls are exposed to and are aware of their own limitless potential.”
