UN Women empowers albinos

UN Women has provided 31 push bicycles, whistles, and security torches to households with persons with albinism in Machinga to improve their safety and security from albino killings and abductions. The items were handed over on Wednesday at Nanyumbu Headquarters in Machinga where community-based policing structures also received 29 push bicycles, reflector jackets, whistles, security torches, pens and hardcovers for record keeping to improve protection of persons with albinism whose population stands at 158 across the district.

UN Women country director Clara Anyangwa noted that the killings, abductions and exhumations of remains of persons with albinism have reduced in the district following the active interventions of the police, traditional leaders and community-based policing structures. She therefore commended the spirit of solidarity between the law enforcers and the community in dealing with the violation of human rights.
