Two women in for drug possession

The Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court on Friday sentenced Patricia Kamwendo to two years imprisonment and ordered Doreen Nguluwe to pay a K500,000 fine for being found in possession and attempting to export a dangerous drug, Apomorphine HCL powder, weighing 3.68kg.

According to Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) Police spokesperson Sapulain Chitonde, the drugs were wrapped inside 93 wrist bangles and were to be exported to Spain through Fedex but the carton was intercepted by police officers at KIA cargo.

Following investigations, the owner of the carton was arrested on December 16 2017. The two women pleaded guilty and in passing the sentence, chief resident magistrate Violet Chipawo said the first accused (Kamwendo) level of participation in the crime was low and fined her K500,000, while Nguluwe was sentenced to a two year jail term without the option of a fine.
