In a shocking development, the Peoples Transformation Party (PETRA) has officially severed ties with the ruling Tonse Alliance, leaving the political landscape in turmoil. The announcement, confirmed by PETRA President Kamuzu Chibambo, cites the rampant corruption in Malawi as the main reason for the split.
According to President Chibambo, it is unacceptable that those who are perpetuating corruption are being protected while those fighting it are being targeted. He points to the recent suspension of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director, Martha Chizuma, and the critical shortages of essential supplies in public hospitals, deteriorating roads, closure of ADMARC, and widespread hunger as areas of grave concern.
“The failures, wrongs, and bad decisions of the Tonse Alliance government run counter to what we campaigned for during the 2020 presidential elections and only serve to undermine all genuine efforts to fight corruption and uphold the rule of law,” said President Chibambo.
He added that he has already informed President Lazarus Chakwera of PETRA’s decision to withdraw from the Tonse Alliance. The political fallout from this latest development is yet to be seen, but one thing is for sure, the Tonse Alliance is facing its biggest crisis yet!
