President Mutharika to attend Chilembwe memorial prayers

President Peter Mutharika is set to attend John Chilembwe commemoration prayers on Sunday (today) at Providence Industrial Mission (PIM) in Chiradzulu. The prayers are scheduled to start at 10 am according to a press statement from the Presidential press secretary, Mgeme Kalilani.

John Chilembwe a Baptist Pastor and educator who trained as a Minister in the United States and returned to Malawi in 1901 was an early figure in Malawi’s resistance against colonialism. Government set aside January 15th of every year to celebrate the life and works of Chilembwe, particularly his contribution to the history of Malawi’s freedom from the rule of British colonialists who plundered the country.

On January 15, 2016, Malawians will be celebrating 102 years since Chilembwe’s death in the famous John Chilembwe Uprising of 1915.
