Number of guns increases in Northern Region

Police in the Northern Region have confirmed an influx of firearms mostly in the form of muzzle-loaders in Rumphi, Mzimba and Chitipa but could not directly comment on the actual number of guns and ammunition confiscated in the region last year. The confirmation by regional police spokesperson Peter Kalaya comes after some poachers in Viphya Plantation threatened to shoot forestry scouts.

Kalaya said the police have been getting tip offs from well wishers about people who own these guns. “Sometimes we conduct searches which led to the confiscation of two guns in Rumphi this year and many more last year.” He said the guns are sent to Malawi Police Service headquarters for destruction.
