National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has called for vibrant citizen participation in rights and governance issues to promote accountability and transparency in the country.
The trust’s coordinator for Dowa, Vincent Mbenjere, made the call at the weekend after an exchange visit to Nkhotakota which they organized for district advisory forum members. He said it was only when citizen forums are proactive that they are able to fight for their rights.
“Experience has shown that exchange visits have helped promote citizen empowerment and engagement which has resulted in various forums callin for elected leaders to account for their actions,” Mbenjere said. He also said he was impressed that the physically challenged in Nkhotakota also had a forum which helps fight for the rights of persons with disabilities in the district and take head on issues that affect them.
