Nankhumwa defeats Mussa and Mwanamvekha, takes over from Chaponda

As Uladi Mussa takes over from Hetherwick Ntaba in Central Region

The drama at the 2018 Democratic Progressive Party’s convention continued to unfold on Tuesday afternoon as Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhumwa was elected vice president for the southern region in a one horse race against veteran heavyweights, Henry Mussa and Joseph Mwanamveka.

The current vice president for the south, Dr George Chaponda, withdrew from the race a day after collapsing in front of delegates while canvassing for votes. He had been booed whilst trying to give a speech and decided to withdraw minutes before official voting started. He cited personal reasons for his decision to withdraw.

The young Nankhumwa who turned 40 thanked the delegates for entrusting him with the leadership position despite his age. The outgoing Chaponda described Nankhumwa as a friend from Mulanje who would be more than capable to takeover.

At the convention, Jappie Mhango retained his position as Treasurer General, while Uladi Mussa was victorius over Hetherwick Ntaba as vice president for the Central region. Grezelder Jeffrey retained the position of Secretary General while Nicholas Dausi remains Publicity Secretary.

President Mutharika went unopposed as Presidential candidate for the party in the 2019 General Elections.
