Recent political murmurings have linked former President Joyce Banda’s People’s Party (PP) with a political alliance with the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in the upcoming May 2019 Tripartite Elections.
Recently, Joyce Banda and her party had formed an alliance with the United Transformation Movement (UTM) led by the country’s Vice President Saulos Chilima but it was short lived lasting only 48 hours. The point of contention was said to be the issue of Chilima’s choice of running mate.
An alliance with the MCP will mean an uphill battle for both the UTM and the ruling DPP especially in the Northern Region where Joyce Banda still seems to have significant popular support.
One thing is very clear though, Joyce Banda has realised that she cannot get back into government alone withouta political alliance.
