Dr George Thupatula Chaponda is reported to have collapsed during a preparatory meeting at the DPP’s regional offices in Blantyre on the eve before the party’s national convention on Sunday, July 1, 2018.
Chaponda who is serving as the Democratic Progressive Party’s Vice President for the Southern Region is facing stiff competition from Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Kondwani Nankhumwa for his position. Other contenders for Chaponda’s position include Joseph Mwanamveka and Henry Mussa.
According to eye witness reports, Dr Chaponda, who was heavily booed at by delegates when he took to the podium, was sweating profusely and seemed confused before collapsing as the delegates booed louder when he was about to address the meeting.
He was quickly attended to before addressing the delegates about 20 minutes later. It is believed that his blood pressure shot up after he realized how unpopular he was compared to Nankhumwa at the meeting.
